History of Murrells Inlet

The history of the Murrells Inlet area was recorded well before the post office officially named the village in 1913.  From Native American tribes to exciting pirate adventures to raging Civil War battles, the area is rich with history and legendary folklore. During the 1700s and 1800s, large pieces of South Carolina land were cultivated into prosperous rice plantations. Nearly 47 million pounds of rice were produced in Waccamaw Neck, an area that includes Murrells Inlet. During this time, South Carolina rice plantations were the wealthiest and most powerful estates in the entire South.

In the early 1800s, many pirates sailed the Murrells Inlet coastline. The pirates would hide in the inlet’s many creeks, anticipating their chance to raid England-bound ships. Later during the 1800s, the Murrells Inlet area served as a very popular vacation destination for many, and this continues today. During the summer, visitors would travel to Murrells Inlet by a river steamboat, and then be transported to their Murrells Inlet, SC homes and cottages by a horse and buggy or oxen cart.

In 1863, the Civil War made its way into Murrells Inlet, causing a rapid decline of South Carolina’s rice culture. Although some of the rice plantations made a partial recovery after the war, the crops could not withstand the series of hurricanes that made their way through the area soon afterwards. In 1916, the last commercial rice grower of the region was officially out of business. At this time, commercial and recreational fishing emerged as the biggest industry in Murrells Inlet.

During the Great Depression, the economy of Murrells Inlet was stimulated when Archer Milton Huntington, a millionaire from New York, spent a great amount of money to develop a 9,000-acre homestead and gardens for personal use. Huntington hired local masons, painters, carpenters, and more to help him carry out the construction of his dream home. Known as the Atalaya, the Huntington home was built with 22 fireplaces, 36 rooms, and beautiful meandering gardens. In 1955, the once-private estate was turned into a part of Huntington Beach State Park, featuring the Brookgreen Gardens, which features the largest showcase of American sculpture in the country.

Since its official naming in 1913, Murrells Inlet has embraced its history through recounts of legendary tales, ghost stories, and a variety of local historic tours that are currently offered to visitors and residents.
